Research into Policy and Practice

Location: Riverside Centre, Riverside Court, Pride Park, Derby, DE24 8HY

Event date: 23 Sep 2010

A free one day training course

Do you want to maximize the likelihood that your research findings will make a difference rather than just sit on a shelf?

This one day course covers the essential requirements for ensuring that research has an impact on policy and practice.

The course will help those who commission or carry out research and evaluation to ensure that their findings reach the right policy and practice audiences, are used and understood and have an impact. Delivered on behalf of the Social Research Association by Janie Percy-Smith to a small group, the course combines presentation, discussion and exercises. Opportunities will be provided throughout the day for participants to share and reflect on their own experiences.

Reasons for attending
By the end of the course participants will:

• Understand the relationship between research and policy and practice

• Have an appreciation of other, competing pressures on practitioners and policy makers

• Understand some key characteristics of policy makers and practitioners who they are seeking to influence through research

• Have developed skills in identifying the key messages from research relevant to policy and practice audiences

• Have considered and critically appraised a range of different modes of communicating research findings

• Have shared experiences and examples of good practice.
