All in One Project - Briefing
What's happening about UK poverty in 2010?
All over Europe there are activities going on to mark 2010 as the Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. In the UK each region is doing something to mark the year and here in the East Midlands we have a project called All in One, running until November 2010. All in One aims to raise awareness of poverty, challenge myths, stereotypes and discrimination, and inform decision makers and policy makers - local and national. The Poverty Convention is the main event of the project.
Nine geographical areas have been chosen as hotspots for financial and social exclusion and are the focus of local activities;
Rural and coastal Lincolnshire, Lincoln, The Peak District, Bolsover, Chesterfield, Mansfield, North Northamptonshire, Leicester, Nottingham.
People with first hand experience of living on very low incomes and tackling barriers to inclusion in our society have been contributing their perspectives throughout the project. The Convention will be an opportunity to hear their stories and offer solutions for the way forward in tackling social exclusion and poverty. It will also feature current successful community activity. People from grassroots, professional practitioners, and decision makers are being invited to attend:
The Poverty Convention, 18th October at The Workhouse in Southwell, ‘What is 21st Century Poverty, how can it be measured and how can policy changes help to alleviate it?'
The East Midlands is fortunate to host the iconic Southwell Workhouse which has been offered by the National Trust as the obvious
home for this event. The Workhouse was built in 1824 and is described by the National Trust as the most complete workhouse in existence.
