Councils are spending millions on spiralling fuel costs

The LGA published a media release on Monday (7th March) stating that 'over the past 12 months, local authorities have had to spend about an extra £20 million at the pumps to keep their fleets of bin lorries, street cleaners, meals on wheels, buses and lawn mowers running'. With fuel costs expected to rise again in April, matched with expected increases in oil costs in the coming weeks, councils are experiencing increasing pressure on other budget areas and reserves.
