Street parties: how will you manage the extra party waste? Your guide to organising a street party or fete

18 Mar 2011

The CLG have produced this simple step by step guide on how to hold a community event. The document includes a simple form that residents can use to let their local authority know about their plans.

WIN's Local Authority checklist for street parties:

  • Ensure residents know how to tell you about planned events (e.g. the CLG form or your council’s own form)
  • Encourage residents to tell you about planned events well in advance (4 – 6 weeks) to allow for planning
  • Liaise with your events or communities team to find out about all planned events
  • Provide other departments with useful information about what residents should do with any additional waste generated
  • Put information on your website which tells residents what to do
  • Ensure that call centre staff know the correct advice to give out
  • Keep collection crews informed of where additional waste may occur and when
  • Where no side waste / closed bin policies are in place, extra waste may have to be collected as a ‘one off’ – ensure your crews are aware of your policy.
  • Be prepared to allocate additional resources for refuse or recycling collections after bigger events
